Music Mind and Body
Music Mind and Body
Hi, I’m Jean Rife, musician, music teacher, chamber music coach, yoga teacher for musicians, and life coach for musicians. My life as a musician has expressed itself most vividly in my love for practice, my love for performing, and my love for teaching. In my classes and private lessons, musicians have been able to transform their daily practice from drudgery, mindless repetition, and boredom to a vibrant exploration of cause and effect, curiosity, and play. And along the way, they have experienced breakthroughs in ease, comfort, technical mastery, and a more colorful expressive palate.
As a seasoned professional, I have had my share of successes, performing around the world, making recordings, and commissioning new works for my instrument. As a faculty member at three well-respected Boston institutions, I continue to share my expertise in performance.
Along the way, I have also had my challenges. When my technique ran into walls, I learned to transform those walls into stepping stones. Fortunately, early on, a friend introduced me to the Alexander Technique, my first in a series of inquiries into the mind-body connection as it related to performing music. I have since studied yoga (and am a certified yoga instructor), meditation, vision therapy, and experiential anatomy. My love for piano was rekindled by years of piano lessons using the Taubman Technique. (Developed by Dorothy Taubman, I call this “yoga for pianists”.) On a more academic note, I even finished a degree in psychology at Harvard. I have been able to integrate all this into my own performance and my teaching, helping others gain better understanding of how they work best and most creatively.
Now, I am integrating whole life coaching for those musicians who would like to find their genuine musical voice, and also to integrate music into their lives in a way that makes sense to them. My passion for coaching others to their fullest self-expression--in music and in life--gives me immense joy. Would you like to experience this kind of change in your music-making and personal life satisfaction? Call me or e-mail me! I offer individual coaching all year, groups by arrangement, and workshops in the summers. JeanRife@mit.edu 617 738 6093
